A 28-year-old DeKalb County man died after being shot outside his home Monday night, despite his family’s efforts to revive him.

Officers arriving to the home in the 500 block of Stonemill Manor near Lithonia found Christopher Jamaal Barber lying in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his stomach, DeKalb police told Channel 2 Action News. His mother was among a group of people trying to help the man, the news station reported.

Barber was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The incident is being investigated by the homicide unit,” police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer said in a statement.

Investigators recovered surveillance video from the Stonemill Manor home that reportedly shows two men arrive about 10:45 p.m. to meet with Barber inside his garage, one in a white SUV and the other on foot.

Moments later, the video shows the men run back out of the garage with Barber chasing them, officers on the scene told Channel 2. A spent shell casing was later recovered from the garage, and a gun was found in the street, the news station reported.

Police have not said what may have motivated the shooting.
