A 23-year-old man sought help at the Lawrenceville Police Department after he was hurt in a deadly shootout Monday night at a nearby apartment complex, police said.

The man showed up around 8:45 p.m. with a gunshot wound in his torso, police spokesman Lt. Jake Parker told AJC.com. He said he was driven the half-mile from the Ashton Creek Apartments off New Hope Road to the station in downtown Lawrenceville by a friend.

After an ambulance arrived to take the man, whose name was not released, to Gwinnett Medical Center, police were dispatched to reports of gunshots at the apartment complex. There they found another 23-year-old man shot dead inside a car in the parking lot behind Building 3, Parker said.

“Evidence from the parking lot and vehicle indicated that there had been an exchange of gunfire between two persons,” Parker said in an emailed statement. “We do not suspect that any other individuals were involved and we are not seeking additional suspects.”

The victim killed in the car is also not being named. Investigators are still trying to determine his relationship to the injured man, who remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon.

Parker said they recovered undisclosed quantities of marijuana from the vehicle in the parking lot and from the clothing of the man taken to the hospital. Two other nearby vehicles were also hit by the gunfire, but no other injuries were reported.
