A man is accused of committing a homicide in DeKalb County around 7 a.m. Sunday. But authorities say that was just the beginning of his alleged violent crime spree.
About 12 hours later, he allegedly shot a woman and a 2-year-old girl in Tennessee before hitting a teenager with his car during a police chase, authorities said.
Victor Lynn Parson, 29, was arrested Monday, Knoxville police said in a Facebook post.
He allegedly began his string of crimes in unincorporated Decatur by shooting and killing his mother’s fiance, 57-year-old Timothy Felts, after a verbal altercation at a home in the 3800 block of Flat Shoals Parkway, DeKalb County police said.
Parson’s mother, Mary Jean, told officers she heard several gunshots coming from another room, and she found her son holding a handgun and Felts bleeding from his chest, according to a DeKalb police incident report obtained by AJC.com.
She tried to ask Parson why he shot Felts, but when she reached for the gun, he fired a few more rounds that didn’t hit anyone and ran away, the report said. Felts, who was sitting in a recliner, died at the scene from two wounds to his chest.
Parson then drove away in his mother’s 2004 Acura MDX, which had a Tennessee tag, the report said. About 7 p.m. Sunday, Knoxville police said they spotted the car after a woman and toddler were seriously injured in a shooting in the 5000 block of Rowan Road. They were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Officers began chasing Parson along Cherry Street after an attempted traffic stop, the department said in a Facebook post. However, he allegedly hit a 13-year-old boy who was on a scooter on Linden Avenue. The teen was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Parson was able to run away from police after abandoning his vehicle in an alley off College Street, the post said. However, that alleged escape was short-lived, since he was arrested Monday morning in an east Knoxville neighborhood after a tip from a resident.
In addition to the murder charge in DeKalb, he faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and two felony firearm-related charges in Tennessee, jail records show.
He remains in police custody in Tennessee, awaiting extradition to Georgia.
