Investigators found gunshot residue on a 24-year-old Marietta man charged in the “execution-style” shooting death of his father, according to court testimony.

Also, Marietta police Det. David Sheffield testified that police found the 9mm Sig Sauer handgun used in the shooting two days later. The gun was from a family collection.

The disclosures came in a Cobb County Magistrate Court hearing in the case of Daniel Attaway, who allegedly shot his father to death Sept. 29 in their Hardage Farm Drive home.

Daniel Attaway “committed an execution-style murder” when he shot his father, authorities said. He shot Douglas Wayne Attaway “between his eyes” and “close to his forehead” in the basement of their house, according to the Cobb arrest warrant.

Investigators also found out that before the deadly shooting, Douglas, a 59-year-old construction executive, had given his son a choice: Find a job or move out of the house, according to testimony. The younger Attaway had certification as a welder.

The judge denied bond for Daniel Attway and ruled that there was enough evidence to let the case move forward.

“Next step will be presenting case to grand jury for indictment, hopefully within 90 days,” Kim Isaza, Cobb district attorney spokeswoman, told AJC.com.

Daniel Attaway initially called 911 and said he had just entered his home and found that his father had been shot and appeared dead, police Officer Chuck McPhilamy said soon after the incident.

However, investigators after a few days developed “sufficient evidence” to charge the son, McPhilamy said.
