A Tallapoosa police officer has been “suspended pending termination” due to a recent Facebook post, according to the department.

The officer made a post that “in no way reflects the values and standards” of the department, according to a Thursday morning Facebook post on the behalf of police Chief Scott Worthy.

The department said a member of the public brought the officer’s post to the chief’s attention.

About five hours later, the department announced that the officer, whose name has not been released, was suspended. While no details about the post in question were released by authorities, members of the community claim they were aimed at black protesters.

“This post is not indicative of the Code of Ethics and dedication to all members of our community by our police department. Swift action has been taken,” the post said.

“We are dedicated to serving everyone equally and we will ensure that every officer displays those commitments every day.”

The department said the officer will be suspended for 72 hours “pending termination,” which is city policy, according to the post.

“Should an officer not display those basic foundations of our service to the people then they will not be a part of our department,” the post said. “The ball is in our court, we have been tested and we will act accordingly to maintain the trust of the public we serve.”

Tallapoosa is located in west Georgia and is about 60 miles west of downtown Atlanta.
