Two people were killed and a third person was seriously injured in a three-car crash in Coweta County Thursday evening.

The accident happened just after 7 p.m., just north of Newnan on Georgia Highway 16 at Hamilton Drive, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Firefighters say that crews rescued two people from two cars engulfed in flames. Two other people were pronounced dead at the scene and a third person was transported by air ambulance to the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Channel 2 reported.

All the victims were adults. Authorities did not release their identities.

The highway was shut down for more than two hours while the crash was investigated.
