The killing of a 14-year-old boy in East Point appears to be part of a violent crime spree that is putting the public at risk, a veteran police officer told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday.
“I’m nervous for the public. I really am,” Capt. Cliff Chandler said. “The number of robberies and shooting these people have been doing is baffling for us….I’ve been doing this is for job for 18 years and I can’t remember a crime spree this violent.”
The death of Anthony Harris, 14, on Monday at the Lakeshire Village apartments off Spanish Trail led detectives to tie the shooters to various carjackings and armed robberies in Clayton, Fulton and Douglas counties, Chandler said.
Detectives, however, are no closer to identifying the robbery crew, Chandler said. East Point detectives plan to compare notes with detectives elsewhere to try to identify members of the crew, who have shot victims, Chandler said.
Detectives believe they have found the Chrysler 300 that was seen speeding from the Monday shooting, which also left two other people wounded. The car has been linked to at least seven other crimes in Clayton, Douglas and Fulton counties, Chandler said.
The vehicle was carjacked July 16 in Clayton County from a woman. In that case, one of the gunmen fired his weapon during the robbery and shot a bystander, Chandler said.
The robbery crew is also tied to a carjacking in Douglasville and possibly another robbery and shooting in Union City that detectives are investigating, Chandler said.
Police don’t think Harris was the intended victim in the Monday attack in East Point. He was hit by bullets fired from assault-style weapons while sitting in a breezeway, Chandler said,.
Two other people were also wounded: Delvicco Howard, 17, and Marquis Cullins, 23.. Police believe Cullins, who left the scene, was the intended target.
