A Douglasville man faces a felony after being accused of using his cellphone during a two-vehicle wreck that killed a young mother early this month.

Erion James Dix, 20, faces a vehicular homicide charge and several misdemeanors after the deadly April 2 incident, Douglasville police Maj. J.R. Davidson told AJC.com. Dix turned himself in Sunday after formal charges were filed, and he was released the following day on a $54,000 bond, according to Douglas County jail records.

The crash took place about 5 p.m. on Riverside Parkway near Roberts Road, Davidson said. The incident killed Katelyn Keith, 22, of Lithia Springs, whose young child was in the backseat of her vehicle during the wreck.

The child, 1-year-old Zion Keith, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Davidson said. According to a GoFundMe page, the toddler suffered a broken leg and a concussion.

Dix is accused of using his cellphone during the wreck and crossing the center line and turn lane, crashing head-on into Keith’s car, Davidson said. He added that it took about three weeks for investigators to determine the appropriate charges.

Dix also faces counts of reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and violating the Hands-Free Georgia Act, jail records show.

AJC.com has reached out to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to request the suspect’s mug shot.

The GoFundMe page, which had raised about $2,800 as of Thursday afternoon, said the toddler is in the care of his father.
