A prominent cardiologist who had hundreds of birds removed from his home last month turned himself in to DeKalb County authorities Friday morning, police said.
Abhay Trivedi is charged with felony animal cruelty after officers found more than 300 birds and eight dogs in the home during a July 13 raid. Fifty of the birds were dead, according to Channel 2 Action News.
A necropsy report confirmed the birds died of dehydration and neglect, DeKalb police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said.
The birds that survived were relocated and volunteers are being sought to help care for them.

Trivedi was released from the DeKalb jail on a signature bond Friday afternoon.
Animal Services received a tip, investigated and obtained a search warrant for Trivedi’s residence on Echo Trail in Atlanta. DeKalb police said the birds were not in adequate cages and the size of the property does not allow for more than three dogs.
Police said it was one of the worst cases of animal hoarding they have seen.
