Before their alleged involvement in a deadly shooting, Charlie and Isaac McDaniel had more than 100 interactions with police, Atlanta police Maj. Todd Coyt said at a news conference Monday.
During that time, the alleged gang members accumulated more than 30 auto theft and robbery charges between them in Atlanta.
Murder could be added to the list.
The McDaniel brothers turned themselves in Sunday at Hunter Hill First Baptist Church following reports they were wanted in connection with a deadly shooting Thursday at a gas station along Campbellton Road in southwest Atlanta. That incident left beloved Ben Hill resident Anthony Brooks dead.
Police found Brooks on the convenience store floor with multiple gunshot wounds after an alleged confrontation about recent carjackings in the area, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. He died at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Police released few details at the news conference on what led to the confrontation, only calling it a “verbal disagreement,” but said Brooks did not have any interaction with the brothers before the day of the shooting.
Coyt said Charlie McDaniel, 16, and Isaac McDaniel, 15, were in a gang and not enrolled in school.
“A lot of criminal activity that is perpetrated by juveniles are symptomatic of discipline issues in the home,” Coyt said.
“We’ve lost two juveniles,” he said. “Two people who had an opportunity to do good things in the community.”
Police would not confirm if the teens had been charged with murder as of Monday afternoon. They were not listed in the Fulton County jail records.
