A Conyers man is facing a vehicular homicide charge in connection with a February hit-and-run that killed a woman in Jonesboro.

Thanks in part to an anonymous tip, Clayton County police Friday announced in a media release that David Nguyen, 22, has been arrested and charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle. Police say he fled the scene after his vehicle struck Gayla Murphy as she attempted to cross Tara Boulevard at North Avenue on Feb. 26. She later died at a hospital.

On March 4, Crime Stoppers received an anonymous tip that a person named David Nguyen recently had been involved in a collision. The Clayton police S.T.A.R. unit then conducted several interviews with people by that name before they developed a suspect in Conyers.

Also, trace evidence of paint from the victim’s body was matched with that used on certain models of Nissan vehicles. The investigation revealed that Nguyen had recently had his Nissan vehicle repaired.

During an interview, Nguyen confessed to driving into Murphy on Feb. 26, police said. Nguyen was taken into custody in the Clayton County jail.
