A 17-year-old was shot and killed after a “verbal altercation” in Jonesboro on Thursday night, Clayton County police said in a news release.

The teenager, identified to Channel 2 Action News as Michael Bardlett by his mother, was found unresponsive on a sidewalk in front of the Tara Woods Apartments in the 600 block of Sherwood Drive about 7 p.m, according to the news release.

“My son was the most charismatic, fun-loving person,” Cazandra Brown said. “That was my best friend ... that was my baby.”

Clayton County fire and emergency officials arrived on the scene to attempt life-saving efforts but were unsuccessful.

Investigators identified Bardlett by using fingerprints. Further details, including what led to the altercation, were not released.

Authorities are still searching for suspects but have not provided descriptions.

The investigation is ongoing.
