The bullets that left two children dead were intended for a 15-year-old, Clayton County Police Chief Michael Register said in an interview Monday.

But that teen wasn’t home when siblings Tatiana Coates, 11, and Daveon Coates, 15, were killed inside their Jonesboro home during what may have been a gang-related shooting, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“We are still trying to locate the 15-year-old that seems to be the root of this issue,” Register said. “We believe he may have valuable information.”

Register said he also wants to protect the 15-year-old, who has not yet been named. The teen stayed at the home after Tatiana and Daveon’s mom took in his family to help them.

Officials think he may be involved in with a gang.

Investigators said the deadly home invasion may be connected to another shooting in Chattanooga, Channel 2 reported.

“It appears there’s a possibility that a vehicle that was seen near the scene of the crime Saturday morning may have been involved in the incident that occurred in Chattanooga,” Register said.

Local authorities are working with Chattanooga police to determine if the two are related.

There were other children inside the Jonesboro home during the shooting, but they were not harmed.

Loved ones took to social media to mourn the deaths of the two children.

Daveon was described as a “sweet soul” who kept to himself. Friends said Tatiana was an “adorable angel.”

Funeral arrangements for the children have not been released.
