A homeowner shot and killed a man he discovered inside his South Fulton home Friday morning, police said.
The man woke up to the sound of glass breaking and his dog barking around 2:30 a.m. He grabbed his gun and walked toward the sounds to investigate, according to South Fulton police spokesman Lt. Derrick Rogers.
“As he approached the area, he encountered a subject in his home,” Rogers said from the scene. “Gunshots rang out between the homeowner and the subject. At this time, the subject is deceased on scene.”
Police could not confirm if any other people were involved in the break-in, but no one else was found inside the home in the 4300 block of Valley Brook Lane.
A search of the residence by the SWAT unit came up empty, Rogers said. Animal Control officers were also called in to keep the homeowner’s dog safe during the search.

While he could not confirm if a weapon had been recovered from the alleged intruder, Rogers said there was an exchange of gunfire.
“The homeowner is OK,” he said. “He received a superficial injury to his hand as he escaped his residence after the encounter."
Investigators do not know if the home was targeted or if this was an isolated incident.
An investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said Saturday that they have not been able to identify the intruder who was shot and killed.
