Search crews are using sonar to locate a possible drowning victim in the Chattahoochee River.

Authorities on Wednesday searched an area off Akers Drive in the Cumberland area of Cobb County for a missing swimmer, according to Cobb police spokesman Officer Neil Penirelli.

A 23-year-old man was crossing the river Tuesday afternoon when he went under about 6 p.m, said Miranda Cook, acting chief ranger of law enforcement and emergency services for the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

Cook said the man tried to swim to an area where people jump off rocks into the water, but couldn’t make it.

Authorities are not releasing the swimmer’s name until his family is notified. The search is expected to resume Thursday morning.
