The GBI has released the name of the man shot by two DeKalb County motorcycle officers following a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.

Jamarri Danez Williams, 28, was pulled over on Memorial Drive in an SUV  just after 2 p.m. for not wearing his seat belt, the GBI said. According to police, Williams, who had outstanding warrants for his arrest, produced a handgun during the encounter, prompting both officers to fire their weapons.

Neither officer was injured, but Williams was taken to the hospital after being shot, DeKalb police Chief James Conroy told Channel 2 Action News at the scene.

“Traffic stops are one of the most dangerous things we do ...  (this one) escalated into a deadly situation,”Conroy said.

Williams, who was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, remains in critical condition, the GBI said.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave, Channel 2 reported.

It was the third shooting involving an officer within hours in metro Atlanta and the GBI’s 21st officer-involved shooting of the year, the GBI said.
