Normal MARTA service resumes after fire extinguished near tracks
Brush fires near the MARTA tracks between the Chamblee and Brookhaven stations have been extinguished after affecting travel Thursday afternoon, the transit agency said.
Crews took about an hour to put out the fires, which forced single-tracking between the two stations, MARTA spokeswoman Stephany Fisher told AJC.com. It’s unclear what started the fires.
Just before 5:30 p.m., normal service resumed.
Brookhaven police shut down some intersections that run along the Norfolk Southern freight tracks while crews battled the fires, the city said in a tweet. The specific intersections were not provided.
Officers also assisted DeKalb County firefighters and Norfolk Southern crews with “numerous brush fires” near the tracks, police previously said in a tweet.
DeKalb Fire Capt. Dion Bentley said two water tender trains were used to help extinguish the fires. No other details have been released.
