Officers were dispatched to a report of a road hazard in the HOV lane, police said. When they arrived, they found a woman dead inside a blue Hyundai Elantra.
“The vehicle was found resting upon the median wall,” police spokeswoman Michele Pihera said. “The officers found the body of a woman inside the vehicle in the driver’s seat. There was a significant amount of blood.”
Investigators with the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately believe the woman’s injuries were a suicide attempt. However, new elements later caused investigators to lean toward suicide as the cause, Pihera said in a statement.
“The final ruling will need to be made by the Medical Examiner’s Office upon the conclusion of the autopsy,” she said.
Detectives did not find any bullet holes or other defects in the passenger side, and there were no passengers with the car when officers arrived.
The investigation caused two left lanes of I-85 just south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard to be blocked for more than seven hours. The lanes reopened about 12:45 p.m.
