About six months ago, a 1-year-old girl died in Clayton County while under the care of her father.

He’s now behind bars, facing charges in the girl’s homicide, authorities said.

John Cornelius Sumner II, 28, of Jonesboro, faces malice murder and first-degree child cruelty charges in connection with his daughter’s death, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

On June 16, police responded to the man’s home after receiving a call about a child being unresponsive, the release said. By the time officers and first responders arrived, the child had already died.

The girl, whose name was not provided, had been under Sumner’s care for the 12 hours prior to her death, the release said. The sheriff’s office said there are videos that show the child had no known health problems when Sumner picked her up from the girl’s mother.

Online jail records show Sumner lives off Spivey Village Trail, but it’s unclear if that’s where the girl died. AJC.com has reached out to Clayton County police for more information on the incident.

According to an autopsy report, the child died from a traumatic brain injury that caused brain bleeding, the release said. That medical examiner’s report prompted the warrants for Sumner’s arrest.

He was arrested within an hour of the warrants being issued, the release said. He was booked into the Clayton County Jail on Wednesday, where he remains without bond.
