The Newton County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday arrested a man accused of shooting and killing a Conyers woman last week.

Alex Kalil Smith, 27, of Monticello, was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Caitlin Jett told AJC.com.

Smith is in custody at the Newton County Jail without bond.

About 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a shooting at a house off White Birch Drive in unincorporated Covington, according the sheriff’s news release.

The victim, 32-year-old Cassandra Arnold, was found with several gunshot wounds. She later died at a hospital.

It’s unclear if Arnold and Smith were acquainted and if she lived in the home. AJC.com has reached out to the sheriff’s office for additional details.
