A well-known fishing guide on Lake Lanier has been arrested for allegedly defrauding investors out of thousands of dollars for boats that weren’t delivered, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Shane Watson, 50, is accused of taking money from two alleged victims for a boat deposit and investments to purchase boats for resale, Channel 2 reported.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Doug Rainwater told Channel 2 that, in one case, “Mr. Watson eventually gave him a check for $45,000. That check was attempted to be (deposited) in that person’s bank account, and the check bounces.”

Rainwater said the sheriff’s office is investigating six or seven cases just in Forsyth County of stolen money allegedly tied to Watson. He also said Watson’s name is synonymous with fishing guides on Lake Lanier.

“His name has been on billboards referencing to fishing guides,” Rainwater said. “He's really the only big name in the county who has been about boats and fishing guides.”

Watson is in jail, charged with three counts of felony theft, fraud and felony fugitive from justice, according to Forsyth County jail records. He has active arrest warrants in Hall County, Milton and South Carolina, Channel 2 reported.
