A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed late Wednesday night after he argued with his mother and stepfather about leaving their southwest Atlanta home during a shelter-in-place order, police said.

The boy’s stepfather, 42-year-old Bernie Hargrove, was arrested on a charge of felony murder after the shooting at the home on Lisbon Drive. The boy’s mother told investigators they wanted him to remain inside due to concerns about the coronavirus, but he went against their wishes, according to an Atlanta police spokesman.

“Later, the victim returned to the home and kicked in the door to the house where a physical fight began between the suspect and the victim,” police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said in a statement. “During that altercation, the victim was shot.”

The 16-year-old, identified by police as De’onte Roberts, was shot in the chest and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Hargrove was detained and questioned at Atlanta police headquarters overnight, Avery said. He was arrested and booked into the Fulton County Jail early Thursday morning.
