One man is in custody and another is on the run after allegedly carjacking a woman at gunpoint, leading police on a 110-mph chase and then crashing into a tree in Marietta.
Francisco Cruz, 21, of Marietta, is one of the two men who allegedly held a woman at gunpoint outside her mother’s home off Franklin Drive about midnight Wednesday, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The two men stole her Mercedes-Benz and made her leave her iPhone in the vehicle, Marietta police told Channel 2. The victim, who asked the news station to remain anonymous, said her phone helped police track them down.
“I was able to track my cellphone with my iPad, with the ‘Find My iPhone’ app,” she said.
She said she was in a similar situation 22 years ago in Charlotte, but that incident turned violent.
“I was robbed at gunpoint and my fiance was killed,” she told the news station. “I know what can happen.”
Police authorized a chase because of the severity of the crime, Channel 2 reported. The pursuit ended with the suspects crashing into a tree near Stephens Street and South Marietta Parkway. The car was totaled in the wreck.
Police arrested Cruz, but his alleged accomplice was able to escape, the news station reported.
Cruz faces 14 charges, including armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, attempting to elude police and several driving-related charges, according to Cobb jail records. He remains in jail without bond.
