Authorities shut down the northbound lanes of Buford Highway in Doraville while they investigated a hit-and-run that killed a construction worker.

A woman was taken into custody Friday hours after she was accused of swerving into a work zone in Doraville and killing a construction worker.

Alexis Dubose, 24, of Atlanta, did not stop after the wreck, according to the Georgia State Patrol. A spokeswoman for the agency said authorities believe her green Kia Soul ended up in Union City, where investigators were on scene Friday afternoon.

Dubose was later arrested on felony charges of homicide by vehicle and hit-and-run. She is also accused of driving recklessly, speeding, and failing to maintain lane in the wreck, the GSP said.

Doraville police were the first to respond about 3:30 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes of Buford Highway near Oakmont Avenue, authorities said. They found the worker, an employee of Marietta-based C.W. Matthews Contracting Company, dead at the scene.

“A C.W. Matthews employee was standing on the right shoulder of the roadway speaking to the driver of a dump truck,” GSP spokeswoman Franka Young said. “The driver of the Kia Soul failed to maintain its lane of travel, striking the pedestrian. The pedestrian then struck the dump truck and was thrown from the scene.”

He was later identified by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office as Scottie Sherman, 50.

“Our thoughts and prayers are entirely with his family at this very difficult time,” Sheldon Fram, an attorney for the contracting company, said in a statement.

The investigation shut down the northbound lanes from about 5:45 a.m. until 7 a.m., when authorities cleared the scene.
