Someone’s Coca-Cola delivery might be delayed after a tractor-trailer carrying the popular Atlanta beverage overturned Tuesday morning on the exit ramp from the southbound Downtown Connector to I-20 East.
The truck was going too fast on the ramp and flipped over shortly before 6 a.m., Atlanta police spokesman Officer Steve Avery told AJC.com.
The driver got out of the truck on his own by climbing through the front windshield, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department said in a Twitter post. Only minor injuries were reported.
Atlanta police cited the driver on a charge of going too fast for conditions, Avery said.
The ramp was shut down while crews worked to remove the trailer from the road. The incident was one of three crashes on major metro Atlanta interstates early Tuesday morning.
A MARTA bus fire led to huge delays at Spaghetti Junction in DeKalb County and a deadly tractor-trailer crash shut down all eastbound lanes of I-20 at Fulton Industrial Boulevard in Fulton County for more than four hours, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
The Coca-Cola truck crash isn’t the first time a strange spill has disrupted Atlanta traffic.
A tractor-trailer carrying a load of Vidalia onions smashed into another truck and caught fire, shutting down Ga. 316 near Buford Drive in Gwinnett County for hours in March.
And in January, a wreck involving a Pepsi truck snarled traffic on three interstates and caused major headaches for Cobb County drivers. It took crews nearly 10 hours to remove the wreckage after the tractor-trailer slammed into a barrier wall on I-285 South at Paces Ferry Road, spilling cans of Dr. Pepper onto the side of the interstate.
