The family of a 17-year-old boy found fully clothed in a Morrow pool last month insists his death was not an accident and should be investigated as a crime.
The Clayton County Police Department said Monday the death of Garrison Denzel Beedles is still under investigation and remains an open case.
Police department spokeswoman JaQuitta Williams said investigators were still waiting on autopsy results and detectives are following up on all allegations made in connection with Beedles’ death.
“This is still an open and active investigation,” Williams said.
Beedles was found in a pool at the Morrowood Townhomes in Morrow on July 23. He died a week later in the intensive care unit at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
Beedles’ family released a statement Monday, complaining about the police response to his death.
According to the statement, Beedles did not know how to swim and had an “extreme fear of pools,” questioning why he was in the area. The family said there had been statements on various social media sites that other teenagers had pushed Beedles into the pool.
“At this time the Clayton County Police have written the incident off as an accidental drowning,” the family’s statement said.
Williams said investigators met with Beedles’ family and “we want to assure them … if there is any kind of allegation like that, it (the death investigation) wouldn’t need to be reopened because it was never closed.”
