Celebrated on November 1, Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, honors the dead with festivals and celebrations. The tradition originated in Mexico but is celebrated widely across Latin America. Instead of mourning lost loved ones, the Day of the Dead is a time to honor their lives with food, drink and parties.

Whether you celebrate the holiday or want to learn more, you'll have the chance with the Day of the Dead Festival in Atlanta. The Atlanta History Center, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico, will hold its 16th annual celebration October 27.

"The unity between life and death is celebrated when families come together and offer hospitality to loved ones" the Institute of Mexican Culture said. "The event is designed to celebrate the history, culture and heritage of the Atlanta region and to pay homage to this very important and festive tradition."

In addition to learning about the rich cultural history of this holiday, the Day of the Dead Festival will also hold an array of contests and activities the whole family will enjoy. A few highlights of the event include altar and museum exhibitions, live entertainment, a costume contest, and traditional food and artisan vendors.
