The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a trail of blood led deputies to a woman’s body Sunday morning, officials said.

Investigators made the discovery about 8 a.m., the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Deputies were sent to the home on Goldshore Way in Statham after neighbors spotted what appeared to be a trail of blood in the driveway.

Investigators saw dark stains that they believed to be blood leading from the driveway to the entrance of the home, the sheriff’s office said. Some of the stains were in the shape of a human foot.

Deputies followed the trail and saw more of the dark stains inside the home. Investigators also found the woman dead inside the home. Her identity was not released.

The woman’s ex-boyfriend was also interviewed by investigators, Channel 2 Action News reported. The man, whose name also has not been released, remains in the Barrow County Jail facing driving charges. It’s unclear whether those charges are related to this case.

The sheriff’s office called the GBI to help with the investigation. Little is known about what led to the woman’s death, but the sheriff’s office said it does not believe the public is in danger.
