Police are investigating a weekend shooting in northwest Atlanta that killed a 16-year-old.

Atlanta police said the teen, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office as Jequan Strozier, was shot around 11 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Lake Valley Road and Hemphill School Road.

Strozier walked to his home a short distance away after he was shot, according to police. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.

Atlanta police Sgt. John Chafee said Strozier was shot one time in the chest. Investigators found one shell casing at the scene, he said.

“At this time investigators believe the victim may have been targeted and they do not believe this was a random shooting,” Chafee said.

Strozier was a student at Frederick Douglass High School, Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Ian Smith confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“The APS family extends its deepest sympathies to Jequan’s family and loved ones,” Smith said.
