Authorities determined that a man whose body was found near railroad tracks in northwest Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon was hit and killed by a train.

Atlanta police officers found the body about 6:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Jefferson Street. The scene is near railroad tracks used by Norfolk Southern, police said.

Atlanta police did not release any other information, adding that the incident is being investigated by the company’s private police force.

“Norfolk Southern Police have taken over the investigation since the incident happened on railroad property,” an Atlanta police spokeswoman said.

A Norfolk Southern spokesman told AJC.com that investigators believe the man was struck and killed by the train earlier in the day. However, it’s still unclear what time the man was hit and which specific train was involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
