A man who stopped to help a stranded driver on I-285 was hit and killed by a passing vehicle Monday night.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes near Buford Highway, according to DeKalb County police. A vehicle stalled in a center lane, and 36-year-old Jeffery Skerritt got out of his own car to help.

Police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer said the next vehicle to come along did not see the stalled vehicle in time. The driver swerved to miss it, hitting Skerritt and subsequently the vehicle, he said.

“It appears the victim was struck by several other vehicles while in the roadway,” Spencer said in a statement to Channel 2 Action News.

No one has been charged in the accident.

The crash investigation blocked multiple lanes on the outer loop for hours overnight, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Authorities did not begin clearing the scene until about 2 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation, Spencer said.
