A 52-year-old Canton man was killed after his car struck a tree and was subsequently hit by another vehicle Monday morning, authorities said.

Robert McCollum was driving his Kia Soul west on East Cherokee Drive just before 7 a.m., according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

He traveled off the roadway, overcorrected and accidentally drove across all lanes of travel until he struck a tree, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. His car ended up in the middle of eastbound traffic, where it was struck by an oncoming vehicle near South Sequoya Drive.

McCollum was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the incident was not injured.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
