A 69-year-old man is dead and multiple people are injured after an overnight car wreck in unincorporated Lawrenceville, police said.

Abdulmajid Khwaja died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, which happened on Buford Drive near Russell Road about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera.

Pihera said Khwaja was leaving the Kroger shopping center parking lot in a white Ford Ranger. He was trying to cross Buford Drive, she said.

While crossing the road, Khwaja failed to yield and collided with a silver Honda Odyssey that was traveling southbound on Buford Drive, Pihera said. She said both vehicles came to rest near a guardrail in front of a child care facility.

Bystanders pulled Khwaja out of the Ranger, which caught fire after the collision, Pihera said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Abel Torres-Molina, 37, was driving the Odyssey and had a total of five people inside the van, Pihera said. All five people were taken to hospitals with “varying levels of injuries,” she said.

Speed and alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the crash, according to police. An investigation is ongoing.
