An Atlanta police officer shot a 17-year-old boy during a “running gunbattle” that began when the officer pursued a stolen vehicle, a spokesman said.

The plain-clothes officer spotted the stolen car on Cleveland Avenue in southwest Atlanta and requested more resources, police said. When the car stopped, the teen, who was driving, got out and fired at the officer, said police, who called it a “running gunbattle” that spilled into a nearby neighborhood.

The officer shot the teen in a leg. A 15-year-old girl who also was in the car was not injured.

The officer was not injured.

The GBI is investigating the incident, the second police-involved shooting of the day. Such investigations are standard in use-of-force cases.
