Five people, including two young children, were killed Wednesday night when their sedan crashed head-on into a MARTA bus in northwest Atlanta.
The two vehicles wrecked about 10:45 p.m. on Bolton Road just south of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, according to Atlanta police. Investigators said the driver of a Nissan Sentra lost control and crossed a center lane into oncoming traffic before the car collided with the bus.
Seven people were traveling in the Nissan. The five victims killed include a woman, her two young children and two teenage girls. Only a 28-year-old driver and a 12-year-old passenger survived the crash.
Shaunta Floyd told Channel 2 Action News she lost her daughter and two grandchildren. They were identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as Kareema Floyd, 22, Kaniyah Floyd, 4, and Kejuan Floyd, 19 months.
Kareema Floyd was expecting another baby, her mother said.
"I'm lost for words right now,” an emotional Floyd said in an interview with the news station. “... That was my daughter, and she was a twin. So it is like she is gone, and her twin is here by herself.”
The other victims were identified Friday as 14-year-old Ashanti Hill and 17-year-old Keshundra Murray. All were from Atlanta.
The two who survived are in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital, a police spokesman said Thursday morning.
“Twenty-five years on the PD, this is the worst accident that I’ve come across,” Atlanta police Capt. F. Turner told Channel 2 from the scene.
The bus driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, MARTA spokeswoman Stephany Fisher said in a statement. Two passengers were on the bus at the time, but neither reported injuries, she said.
A second car crashed into the Nissan after the initial wreck. Fisher said the occupants of that car were not injured.
According to police spokesman Officer Steve Avery, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
