A baby was in critical condition and three others injured when all four were shot Monday night while in the breezeway at a DeKalb County apartment complex, according to police.
No one was in custody late Monday, but investigators vowed to find the person responsible. The suspect walked into the breezeway at the Austin Oaks apartments, on Glenwood Avenue near Decatur, and started shooting shortly after 8 p.m., according to Cornelius Yarbro, assistant chief of detectives for DeKalb police.
“This is something that the DeKalb police is not going to tolerate,” Yarbro said. “Rest assured, we’re going to find the person or people responsible for this.”
Three adults were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the lower extremities, but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police and fire officials. A boy believed to be around one year old was taken in critical condition to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he underwent surgery late Monday.
“Any injury to a child like this is substantial, no matter where it is,” Yarbro said.
It was not known Monday night if those injured were related. The alleged gunmen left the area on foot, according to police.
Detectives remained at the scene late Monday.
