Police on Tuesday morning investigated a fatal shooting outside a Goodwill donation center in northwest Atlanta, marking the city’s 115th homicide case this year.
The victim, identified by authorities as 73-year-old Lawrence L. Denney of Atlanta, was shot multiple times about 3:30 a.m. on Collier Road, according to police. He was found by officers searching the area of the Goodwill after a 911 caller reported gunfire.
“All we know at this point is that potentially two to three vehicles were seen leaving the parking lot of the Goodwill at the time of the gunfire,” Atlanta police homicide unit commander Lt. Pete Malecki said from the scene.
The 911 caller, an employee at the Citgo across the street, did not provide any further description of the vehicles, he said. Investigators are hoping surveillance cameras at the Goodwill store and surrounding businesses will provide them with some answers.
“That will be really paramount to getting us off to a really quick start in the initial investigation in this case,” Malecki said.
It was the first of two deadly shootings reported Tuesday. A 59-year-old woman was shot dead as she slept in her southwest Atlanta apartment. Police believe that shooting was a drive-by.
Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact police.
