Throng forced closure of heavily trafficked routes Saturday

Two people were shot and four were hit by shrapnel during a beach day Saturday in Daytona Beach, Florida, Police Chief Craig Capri said Sunday during a news conference.

The wounded had non-life-threatening injuries, Claire Metz of news station WESH reported. Much of the confrontation occurred at a 7-Eleven store on State Road A1A, WESH reported.

The shooter was not in custody as of Sunday afternoon, Capri said at the news conference.

The wounded were treated and released, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Large crowds gathered on the beach side and on Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard, police said. The department deployed resources to assist with traffic control, and the crowds dispersed when asked by police. No arrests were made due to the large gathering, police said.

Massive groups crowded the city streets Saturday, forcing police to temporarily close the bridges, according to Spectrum News/News 13.

A video from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office showed the massive groups Saturday.

Officers described people climbing on cars and people throwing cash at the crowds as the throng shut down some heavily trafficked routes, Spectrum News/News 13 reported.

A person in a white car who was throwing money out of the vehicle will be prosecuted, officials said Sunday at the news conference.
