A 21-year-old and a 17-year-old were killed and at least five were injured during a block party of up to 1,000 people in Union County, South Carolina, according to Fox Carolina.

Gunfire erupted during the block party late Saturday near Dover Road and Faucette Road, Fox Carolina reported, citing Jonesville Sheriff David Taylor.

A complaint about the block party was received about 8 p.m. Saturday because of cars in the roadway, UCSO Maj. Scott Coffer told Fox Carolina.

Deputies cleared the cars, but gunshots were heard about 10:30 p.m., Fox Carolina reported. The first officer arrived within nine minutes, the news station reported.

Witnesses told deputies that someone started shooting at the party from a car while driving down the road, and that people at the party exchanged gunfire, Fox Carolina reported.

The victims were transported to hospitals in Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties, according to Fox Carolina.

The families of the deceased had not been notified as of late Saturday, Coroner William Holcombe told the news station.

A few suspects were detained and one was arrested, Coffer told Fox Carolina.
