One Wednesday, celebrated actor Tom Hanks announced he and wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. His son provided a health update on the two acting legends late Wednesday.
The Oscar award-winning actor announced the news Wednesday night. He and Wilson, who has also starred in dozens of films, were in Australia while he was filming a movie about Elvis Presley. Chet Hanks, the couple’s son, said he talked them after the announcement about their positive results.
“I just got off the phone with them,” he said late Wednesday night. “They both are fine. They’re not even that sick...They’re not tripping, but they’re going through the necessary health precautions. I don’t think it’s anything to be too worried about.”
The “Castaway” actor was in Australia to film a a movie directed by Baz Luhrmann, according to The New York Times. The 63-year-old is playing the role of Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s eccentric manager, who helped shape the career of the legendary singer in the 1950s.
He informed his fans on Twitter and Instagram that he had been diagnosed.
“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia,” he wrote in a message on his Twitter page. “We felt a bit tired like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.”

Hanks added that he and Wilson will be monitored and isolated for now.
Australia has reportedly had more than 120 cases confirmed cases of coronavirus.
Hanks’ announcement came right as President Donald Trump said he would ban travel from Europe to the United States for 30 days starting Friday night. The ban excludes the United Kingdom.
