A man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle Saturday evening while riding his bike on a highway in Oconee County.

The Georgia State Patrol was called to U.S. 78 near Clotfelter Road shortly before 6 p.m. after the vehicle collided with the bicycle, agency spokesman Lt. Mark Riley said. When troopers arrived, the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene, he said.

Riley said authorities attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but he did not indicate if the bicyclist died at the scene or was taken to a hospital. He was identified as 42-year-old Christopher Lamar Burton.

The suspect has not been identified and authorities are looking for any witnesses to the crash. GSP is assisting the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.

Anyone with information on the wreck is asked to contact Trooper First Class Gaddis at 706-552-4439.
