A DeKalb County city is trying to provide kids with an outdoor activity this spring by launching a youth baseball league.

Children can sign up to participate in Tucker’s inaugural baseball league, which is being run by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and The Baseball Foundry, a baseball and softball training facility near Northlake Mall. Boys and girls ages five to 12 are eligible, and they do not have to live in Tucker’s city limits to participate.

The young sluggers’ games will take place at the recently refurbished Kelley Cofer Park and Fitzgerald Park baseball fields, according to a news release. The nine-week season will begin in March and wrap up in May.

Rip Robertson, the director of Tucker’s Parks and Recreation Department, said baseball is among the most socially distant sports, making it a prime outdoor activity for children amid the coronavirus pandemic. Tucker already hosts a youth basketball league in addition to other programs.

“With our fields looking great and baseball being more socially distant than just about any other sport, what better time to open our Tucker Baseball League,” Robertson said in the release. “I’ve seen baseball really flourish in other Parks and Rec operations and I know it can — and will — be successful here.”

The Baseball Foundry’s website splits the league into tee ball, coach pitch baseball and kid pitch baseball seasons depending on age and skill levels. Registration fees vary from $150 to $225. The website adds that any event attendees must wear a face mask and practice social distancing.

The Baseball Foundry will provide coaches, create practice and game schedules and manage the instructional program for all players. The program will be supervised by Jason Garcia, the Director of Athletic Operations at The Baseball Foundry.

Registration opened last week at baseballfoundry.com/cot and will run through Feb. 15.
