Rain delayed the Braves opener Friday night at Turner Field, pushing the game start back to around 9 p.m. The storms moving through the metro area also left downed trees and thousands without power late Friday.

"If you are at the Braves home opener," Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Glenn Burns warned early in the evening, "you will need your rain gear."

He was right. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties as storms moved quickly through the metro area, and the AJC's Braves columnist David O'Brien tweeted shortly after 6 p.m. that tarps were out at Turner Field. Pre-game ceremonies eventually began at about 8:15 p.m., and the game was expected to start around 8:50 p.m.

The fast-moving storms brought some damage, including knocking onto power lines at the Midtown intersection of 10th Street and Monroe Drive. Twitter users also reported some street flooding and hail. The Georgia Power Outage map showed nearly 7,000 people without power around 10:30 p.m. Friday.
