With its shelter exceeding capacity, Fulton County Animal Services offered to waive adoption fees until 6 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday to ease overcrowding. With the numbers not where they needed to be at kickoff, the offer was extended.
Nearly 400 dogs at LifeLine Animal Project’s Fulton County shelter located at 1251 Fulton Industrial Blvd. NW are in need of homes, the county said on Friday.
Animals are at risk for euthanasia due to limited space, LifeLine said.
“We urgently need adopters and foster families to please help us save lives,” the nonprofit said on its website.
The shelter’s dog population hit 397 last week, surpassing its maximum capacity of 375. Erica Beard, director of client services for LifeLine, said the dog population had not reached 375 as of Sunday evening.
Fulton County Animal Services will continue to offer free adoptions next weekend from Feb. 14 to Feb. 16, Beard said.
“We are working in increments each week to achieve this, but until we can make that goal a reality, unfortunately, euthanasia is a potential outcome for any animal brought into the shelter given this space crisis,” Lifeline said.

Dogs most at risk of euthanasia are those associated with behavioral or health issues, which can expose other animals in the shelter to illnesses and deteriorate the overall environment at the shelter, Lifeline said.
The nonprofit initially sent out an emergency call for help Tuesday on social media, urging animal lovers to adopt or foster at the Fulton or DeKalb County Animal Services shelters.
The adoption fee for dogs typically cost $85 and $65 for cats. Dogs and cats over the age of 5 typically cost $40 to adopt.
LifeLine manages the Fulton and DeKalb County Animal Services shelters, two of the largest county shelters in metro Atlanta.
