After another spell of 90-degree weather, Tuesday marks the beginning of a cooler weather pattern in metro Atlanta.

Instead of being in the low to mid 90s, temps will top out in the mid 80s today.

Northeast winds are flowing down the eastern slopes of the Appalachians, which is what is driving the lower temperatures, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

“Now, this is a pattern we’re used to little later in the fall,” he said. “So this is a little early for this kind of pattern. I don’t think will be very many complaints. It’s going to feel pretty good the next couple of days.”

Overall, we’ll have more clouds than sunshine this afternoon, and some of us could see a few showers, but not very much of it. There is just a 20% chance of rain in the forecast.

The cooler weather is a welcomed change after what has been a very hot summer. Typically, the region sees 47 days with temperatures in the 90s. This year, we have already had 67 days with 90-degree temperatures.

There are still a couple of weeks before the official end of summer, but temps are expected to stay below 80 degrees. Although, we could still get close to the 90-degree mark before summer ends and fall begins on Sept. 22.

As for rain, we’re staying mostly dry through Thursday. There will be a 40% chance of showers on the southside that day, and a 60% chance of rain across the region on Friday. Showers dwindle over the weekend, with just a 30% chance on Saturday and none expected on Sunday.

On Thursday and Friday, when the bulk of the rain is expected, temps will take a dip into mid to upper 70s. We’ll be back in the 80s for the weekend and early next week.
