High humidity is sticking around after heavy rain fell across metro Atlanta overnight into Monday morning, and more showers are on the way this evening.

“It’s all about the heat and humidity before any rain arrives,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

Today’s high will top out around 93 degrees in the city, but “those feels-like temperatures will be around 100 degrees in Atlanta,” Deon said.

South of the metro area, the heat index could feel up to about 106 degrees, the National Weather Service warns. A heat advisory will go into effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for locations south and east of the city.

Heat advisories take effect when heat index — how hot it really feels taking air temperature and relative humidity into account — values top 105 degrees. Under those conditions, the body can’t cool itself efficiently because perspiration doesn’t easily evaporate in high humidity. Heatstroke, which can be deadly, sets in when your body temperature exceeds 103 degrees.

“Even outside of our advisory, we’re all going to feel the heat,” Deon said.

Closer to the evening, scattered thunderstorms will filter through the city and metro area.

“Some will bring us some heavy downpours, just like what we had (Sunday),” she said. Frequent lightning is also a concern, the NWS warns.

We’ll see a repeat of conditions throughout the week, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms possible each day. But the risk for severe weather remains low, the NWS reports.
