Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann announced Thursday she plans to run for Senate District 14 against a state Representative.

Hausmann, a Republican who has spent 11 years on the county board, will face Rep. Josh McLaurin, a Democrat who represents House District 51.

She sat on the first Johns Creek City Council and also served on the Fulton board of education from 2002 to 2006. Her commissioner term finished at the end of this year. McLaurin, an attorney elected in 2018, has called for an overhaul of the state’s prison system.

As noted by two political reporters with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the senate district itself has undergone some change. It was moved from rural Bartow County to North Fulton/Buckhead to account for population growth, making it a district with a lot of political variance.

In response to news of Hausmann’s candidacy, McLaurin simply tweeted: “We ready.”
