Spring is just around the corner, but Thursday’s weather is a chilly reminder that it’s not here yet.
Light snow may have caused slick roads in the North Georgia mountains Thursday morning, while overnight freezing temperatures and wind gusts made it feel like winter in metro Atlanta.
The sun will bring temperatures up to the low 50s by the afternoon after a chilly morning. Snowflakes and sleet were spotted in the city overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
From Wednesday evening through 10 a.m. Thursday, those in mountain elevations above 2,500 feet braced for the possibility of snow accumulations up to 1 inch, according to the NWS.
Gusty winds up to 40 mph are making the air feel cold in metro Atlanta. While morning temps were in the high 30s, the wind chill made it feel like the 20s, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
“The story is the wind: really gusty, really strong this morning,” he said. “It feels like 28 in Atlanta.”
Those gusts are expected to slow to just over 20 mph in the afternoon, Monahan said.
A freeze warning was in effect until 10 a.m. for parts of northwest Georgia and Atlanta. All of metro Atlanta and much of Middle Georgia is under a frost advisory until Friday morning, according to the NWS.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the high 60s over the weekend. Atlanta may see some showers Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to the NWS.
