Army Pfc. Brandon D. Goodine, 20, died June 7, 2012, after his unit was attacked in Afghanistan. “He died for his daughter,” Goodine's sister Hailey McLaughlin says. “Yes, he loved his country, but ultimately it was for her.” SPECIAL TO AJC

Note: This story has been updated to reflect that two non-residents from Georgia, Maj. Cole Hogan of Macon and Adam White of Buckhead, were killed on Sept. 11.

There was a time when Sept. 11 was just another day on the calendar. That changed the brutal morning in 2001 when 2,977 people were killed by terrorist hijackers who slammed commercial airliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.

War called and America’s young people answered, eventually fighting on two fronts simultaneously. In the 20 years since the Sept. 11 attacks, 7,054 U.S. servicemen and women were killed on battlefields in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Four Georgia residents and two non-residents from the state were killed in the Sept. 11 attacks; another 220 died in military service trying to make sure another terrorist attack didn’t happen again.

Army Private First Class Brandon Goodine, 20, was one of them. Goodine, a graduate of Henry County High, died June 7, 2012, after his unit was attacked in Afghanistan. When a fellow soldier stepped on a pressure plate-engaged improvised explosive device, Goodine attempted to help him and was killed by another IED.

Goodine’s younger sister Hailey McLaughlin remembers her brother as a prankster who enjoyed playing jokes on their mother (who returned the favor). When it came to JROTC, however, Goodine was absolutely serious.

“JROTC was something he took pride in,” McLaughlin said Thursday. “Brandon would come home and perfectly align the pins and ribbons on his uniform, shine his shoes. He’d ask me or our mom to make sure his pants were creased just right and he laid out his uniform the night before he’d wear it to school.”

Joining the Army after high school, Goodine was assigned to Bravo Troop, 73rd Cavalry of the 82nd Airborne.

“The first plane he was ever in, he jumped out of. He was terrified of airplanes, but for some reason he wanted to jump out of them,” McLaughlin recalls. “He was a goofball. And he was a great kid.”

McLaughlin admits she didn’t fully realize just how potentially deadly her brother’s mission was at the time.

“I knew he was in a war zone overseas,” she says. “But I didn’t know it was that dangerous until it hit home.”

In the near 10 years since Goodine’s death, his family mourns his loss but never forgets to celebrate his life. Still, it’s been a difficult journey, his sister points out.

“I had just graduated high school in May 2012. Ten days afterward, Brandon died,” McLaughlin remembers. “My mom was planning his funeral on her birthday.”

Maynard Spence of Douglasville, a construction safety consultant for Marsh & McLennan Cos., Inc., died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.

In a Sept. 19, 2001, article profiling Georgians who lost family members in the initial attacks, AJC staff writer Maurice Tamman detailed how Spence’s daughter, Kristina, “had grown accustomed to her father flying from Atlanta to Tampa to surprise her on her birthday.”

“Ever since (she was) born they’ve had a daddy-daughter birthday and he has not missed one,” Spence’s ex-wife, Sheila, said. “She’s expecting him to head here and surprise her. She said, ‘It would be just like daddy to do this and not tell us he was OK.”

Kristina Spence turned 20 shortly after Tamman’s piece ran in the paper. But her father wasn’t there.

October 2015 brought devastating news to Michael Ruiz of McDonough. His daughter, Airman 1st Class Kcey Ruiz, 21, was among six airmen killed when a C-130J Super Hercules crashed shortly after takeoff from Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan.

“It’s unbelievable, she was supposed to come home at the end of this month,” her father told Channel 2 Action News at the time.

“Ruiz was stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts and left for Afghanistan in April,” reporter Alexis Stevens wrote in the AJC. “(Her father visited her) in Boston and planned to see her in six months.”

“I didn’t say goodbye, I didn’t want to say goodbye,” Michael Ruiz said. “I just told her I would see her later and I never got that chance.”
