Clayton County Schools will launch a flag football league for elementary schools this week.
Twenty-three schools will compete in the district’s inaugural elementary flag football season, the school system said in a news release Monday.
The five-week league’s first games will be played this Saturday at Southern Crescent Stadium and Hines Ward Field at Tara Stadium. The fields are located at 6231 Garden Walk Boulevard in Riverdale and 1055 Battle Creek Road in Jonesboro respectively. Game times are 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., the district said.
The district is creating the league to expose students “to opportunities that address their academic, physical or athletic, emotional, and social needs as they matriculate through our school system, said Ralph Simpson, deputy superintendent of administrative services.
“As part of his five priorities, Superintendent Dr. Anthony W. Smith, made a commitment to cultivating a school safety culture,” Simpson said. “The development of athletic activities for our students, including those at the elementary level, are part of the strategies created to support this priority.”
